YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MEDIATED EXPERIENCE: Wenchuan earthquake

i have been away from china for almost 10 years. During this period, I have leaned different cultures, different points of view, and how to analysis different understandings form different positions. But, one thing actually units all the world together; the worst earthquake happened in china for past 30 years.

It was just a usual day. I came back home after a long day of study and work. Then I turned on my computer and checked my email and daily news. I found all the front pages and the headlines were about the earthquake. Thousands of people were reported killed today when China’s worst earthquake for 30 years struck a densely populated area in Sichuan province. The massive quake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, flattened schools, offices and house in the southwestern province, and caused widespread damage in nearby Gansu and Yunnan provinces as well as the sprawling municipality of Chongqing. I read those news once and once again, praying there was one less person bared under the crashed houses, preying the is one more person got rescue from the deep ditch. On the second day, more and more detailed news came out, hundreds of touching stories and brave heroes were reported. People who weren’t there can actually feel the pain and the anxiety in the disaster area. The reports encouraged numerous volunteers went to China for help and millions dollars of donations.

Not only the mass media had the positive feedback to help. Also, the people who were using the internet tried the own way to help that by adding a “red heart and China” in front of the MSN id to inform people they were supporting the victims of a natural disaster.

Though the disaster, I leaned that, the media has a great power to notice and to motivate people. Also, it can unit us to help, or say to focus on the same point to give the positive result. Moreover, the people who are consuming the media can further inference the people around or in torched to offer their abilities to give out positive feedbacks.

  1. It is true that, while many may have issues with mass media, we all can appreciate its value in times of disaster. Whether that value is seen through its ability to unite people and inspire individuals to do all they can to help, or to reveal the inactions of those who are expected to help, the size and power of mass media around the world has to be appreciated.
